I can’t wait to get more chickens

I was going to wait until next year to get some more chickens but the girls have settled into the new shed so well that I am thinking, why wait!

I started researching as I know there are not many bantam breeders in our area and I would really like to add some different breeds to my flock. All the breeders I found locally either didn’t have bantams or had sold out.

I decided to call the lady where I got the vorwerks and leghorns from because I remembered her having other breeds. She has a bantam silkie and light sussex cross often called goldtops. I looked them up and they are very pretty. They lay cream eggs and are docile and friendly and make ideal pets.

I called her back and asked her to save her goldtop for me. We have visitors for the weekend so I said it may have to be next Friday afternoon before we can go and see her. We would see what else she has and pick another bantam to accompany the goldtop.

I am feeling really excited and if we have a quiet afternoon we will go sooner. The farmer said to just call her when we are ready. I can’t wait.

Those sound adorable! I know that Silkies are good birds, and that Sussex are awesome too! Have fun picking out more, though you’ll probably want to take the whole barn!

I am shocked ! I really thought you would wait till next year .

Can you see my nose growing from there? 🙂

I think it will tie it altogether nicely and if you really want an excuse you have lost two .

    • That’s what I thought and now with a much bigger coop I feel the need to have the flock back to it’s original number. We have agreed that we wouldn’t have more than eight but we don’t want less than six.

Oooh I’m excited too! Looking forward to seeing them already!

    • I can’t wait to be doing a post with photos of new girls. We are now booked next Friday so are looking to go and collect before then as soon as we have an afternoon with a little time. Now the decision is made I feel the sooner the better. I can’t wait!

Well I told you this was going to happen, and you assured me you’d wait until next year…

    • I know! But everything has gone so smoothly with the new shed and it will take us back up to eight again. Beside with a bigger shed there is more space.

Both Peaches and Barley have now laid their egg in the new shed so they obviously like it in there.

Gold tops are lovely, a cross between a gold silkie cock and a light sussex hen. They are renowned broodies and are purported to make excellent mothers! I hatched two in my last set of eggs; unfortunately, both are males! Really look forward to many more lovely photographs.

    • The farmer warned me that they do go broody and said in fact that was what she breeds them for and warned me that they may not be the best layers. I said after Topaz with six eggs last year and eight eggs this year, they couldn’t be worse than that. She was surprised and said she had never had a hen that unproductive. I think they just look lovely.

We now have a booking on Friday and are booked up on Monday so we plan to go Tuesday, I just can’t wait. I too am looking forward to photos of new girls. I am so excited.
