The little girls like their shelter

The little girls have really taken to the shelter. Rusty and Freckles have been in there several times today. They either perch on the front piece of wood or they stand on the side bits, pecking around.

Speckles is the only one of the bigger girls to venture in and she likes the branch perch. Pebbles likes the front perch and Rusty and Freckles like all of it. I am really pleased with the way they have taken to it.

I have an appointment at the vets tomorrow at four o’clock with Pebbles. She has been on antibiotics now for three weeks in total, a week on then a week off then two weeks back on. She is still wheezing and it doesn’t seem to be improving. She also spends a lot of her day on a perch, dozing. I am really disappointed that there has been no improvement as she has been like this for a month now.

It seems to have been one thing after another lately with several visits to the vet. I just wish we could get back to a well flock once more. This seems to have been dragging on for ages and I dread any of the other girls going down with it. I will report back tomorrow.

I am sure the little girls will spend a lot of time in the shelter, when the weather is bad, they seem to be enjoying it in there already, I hope Pebbles get better soon.

    • The little girls seem to love the shelter and have made it their own. I think this will be a great thing in bad weather.

Pebbles seems to have been like this for so long. I just want to see an improvement in her. It seems very difficult to get chickens well again. Unfortunately we haven’t had one get better yet through the vets but I have to hope this time will be different.

Are you familiar with the site http://fresheggsdaily.com/ ? Do not know if there is anything there that can help, but there is a lot of information! So much to learn! And, of course, hoping for the best.

Awesome job. I really like this. I’m always on the look out for things on the curb that I can use in my run. Love repurposing things for the hens.

    • I have to say that I am really pleased with it. My husband originally made the table for a tight space on our patio next to the chicken run but when we changed the sheds there, which gave us more space, we bought a bargain patio set and it was no longer needed. Rather than waste it we put it in the run and the girls liked to sit on top of it. Now it’s turned in to something much more useful and the little girls have taken it as their own. My husband will come indoors and say to me “Rusty and Freckles are in their little house”. That makes me smile.

They certainly seem to be insecting every inch of it, with their characteristic curiosity. Pebbles is a bit of a puzzle; I do hope that she is all right. Like you, virtually all of my visits to the vet’s have had a sad, but inevitable, outcome – apart from Sneezy, who recovered from a viral infection two and a half years ago. She is not looking brilliant now, however – old lady in the moult syndrome.

Sorry – just noticed my hopeless typing – should say ‘inspecting’ – although if there were any insects, they’d be dinner, I suppose!

    • They are probably insecting as well as inspecting. They certainly do a lot of pecking at it and as far as I can see they can only be pecking at specks of dust. I have no idea why!
