Cinnamon has a “light bulb” moment

Yesterday I could tell Cinnamon wanted to lay her egg. She hangs around the patio and is more vocal when she wants to lay.

Soon she was settled in her spot on the perch in the chicken shed. I heaped the pine shavings beneath her.

I went back a little later and was surprised to see this.

She seems to have had a “light bulb” moment and decided that this is actually a good spot to lay her egg.

I checked back a little later and her egg was in the nest she had made in the corner. Well done Cinnamon! I wonder if she will now continue to lay in a sensible place. Time will tell.

    Well done Cinnamon.

    • That’s exactly what I thought. There is hope for her returning to more normal behaviour after all.

On the other hand Apricot got soaked again today. She has dried out now but she is the only one that gets wet like this. It has rained all day yesterday and today and I am so fed up with it. It is producing huge courgettes though. I have two of the biggest tomatoes ripening indoors.

Good Job Cinnamon. I knew you could do it.

I wonder if she would use a nest box if it was located in the coop? I’ve read so much over the few months and everything suggests that they like a cosy dark place, this proves that isn’t always the case!

    • During the summer, when the bigger girls were laying, I put a cat box in the shed as an extra nest box. Some of the girls used it, Emerald in particular liked it, but Cinnamon never used it even though I put her inside it to show her it. I did try shutting her the nest boxes on the patio area and she laid in there for a few times but once she missed laying for a few days she seemed to forget about them. They are dark. Rusty, Freckles and sometimes Dandelion will lay in a corner of the chicken shed at times. I figure that as it is always clean (I pick up every morning) it doesn’t matter and can be a giant nest box. They are all so different in what they like.

Hopefully this will become a trend!
