The chicks have bedtime sorted

I didn’t think there would be a problem with the chicks going in at bedtime and I was right. About nine o’clock each night they settle in the little coop and I just have to close up the door.

As I am always awake early I have been opening their door at five o’clock which is when the automatic door on the main chicken shed opens. As soon as I open the door they come straight out and into the food dish.

I then go back to bed. If I am not out so early it won’t matter if they come out later but while I am awake early I feel I may as well let them out at the same time as the other girls.

The chicks soon investigated the little coop

I will let them get used to this first and then later I will try to encourage them to perch. I am confident that when they outgrow the dog crate they will be fine about going in the coop at bedtime.

They all look well, and happy little chicks.

I am very pleased with the chicks. They are sleeping outside now and seem to be absolutely fine with it. They are growing fast.

They are looking really well. Blue has more of a comb than I’d have thought? How many weeks of age are they now?

Funny you should say that as I hadn’t got round to saying anything yet but I have been wondering about that. Blue’s comb has suddenly grown, her feet are bigger and her legs are longer. I have been think uh oh! Could she be a he. I then remembered that silkie girls are much slower to mature and I went to my second history of the flock. Scroll down to the bottom and there is a photo of the three amigos. Dandelion and Cinnamon have combs and Apricot has none at all. The chicks are coming up three months now.

When I voiced this to Richard he said that Lemon is so much bigger than Jasmine too. I then went back to the photos of the first day and Jasmine was quite a bit smaller but it’s more obvious as they are growing. I keep trying to convince myself that the breeder must know what she is talking about when she sexed them.

I am still a bit concerned though. Time will tell. Blue is my favourite and I can’t return any boys with the mico having been present in my flock so I am telling myself that if that turns out to be so I will keep Blue anyway. I truly hope we are wrong though.
