Dandelion is moulting

Recently Dandelion was having a lovely dust bath. When she left the dust bath I saw that she had left a little heap of feathers behind.

I then noticed she was looking really scruffy around the neck with bare patches and pins showing. Her head is also patchy and I could see fine, tiny, feathers wafting from her head.

I have never seen Dandelion moult like this before. Usually seramas moult a few feathers at a time and it isn’t very noticeable.

The last thing Dandelion needs is bare patches, at this time of the year, as she feels the cold more than any of the other girls. My theory is that frizzle feathers are not as insulating as straight and silky feathers.

The only good thing is that hopefully they will grow back in before the really cold weather.

Dandelion makes use of this small shelter more than any of the other girls so at least she knows the best place to go on cold days.

I really feel for Dandelion and hope she gets her feathers back in quickly.

She is a little bundle of feathers, she is so pretty. Hope her moult is over soon.

Me too. I have never seen her with bare patches before. I hope the pins open quickly. She is a little round ball of a girl. I have become so attached to her as she has overcome so much in her time with us.

She may be very quick to replace her feathers. I’ve noticed that some of mine seem to go on for months, whilst others are done in no time. Never had a year when so many have come back into lay this early, after completing their moult – first brown egg layer yesterday, then again today, so almost enough eggs to start and give some away again. 🙂

I hope Dandelion is quick to get her feathers back. It’s good that you are getting eggs. I have Cinnamon laying one a week and Ebony and Flame still laying most days so still plenty of eggs.

My little black serama Nellie has a completely bare head at the moment. Looking at the run you would think she would be completely bare!

You’re so lucky to be getting eggs. Someone laid last week but I hadn’t had any for ages!! 🙁 xx

Aw, it’s so sad to see bare heads. Cinnamon is laying every eight days for the last four eggs. Ebony and Flame are still laying most days which is amazing. I am actually devising evening meals to use eggs. xx
