Sharing a nest box

I was surprised to see Ebony and Flame sharing a nest box.

Flame and Ebony share a nest box

The next minute Smoke had joined them.

Smoke decides there is room for her too

Three girls in a nest box

The girls seem a lot more cosy than usual at the moment. When I next checked their eggs were side by side.

Sometimes the pecking order can look so harsh that it is heart warming when I see a bit of togetherness going on.

It’s so nice to see them laying their eggs together – a bit of bonding!! xx

It does seem like there is a bit of bonding going on at the moment. It is nice to see. xx

Really good to see – and you have nest boxes with loads of room. I have 3 broodies sitting side by side, covering 18 eggs between them, although the distribution varies!

I have three nest boxes with loads of room plus four corners in the chicken shed and still they sometimes all want the same spot but oh my goodness, I can’t imagine 18 eggs! 6 eggs in one day is the record so far. I am waiting for that to be broken. So far only one broody at a time but you never know!

  7. david says:

Sorry if I’ve been confusing – not 18 of our own, but 18 I bought, for the purpose of hatrching. One was cracked today when I went to let the hens out to feed, drink and exercise, so down to 17 now.

Oh, I feel a bit stupid now. I did think that would be an awful lot of eggs to discover in the nest boxes being sat on. I thought that perhaps you had been out for the day on a particularly productive day! It makes sense now. Shame about the cracked one but still plenty to go. Good luck and let me know how it goes.
