Red goes broody again

Red went broody two days ago just as Gold came out of her broody spell. Red had laid nine eggs in nineteen days. Ginger, Silver and Snow are all laying every other day. Storm is laying on average once a week. As she is five years old and game girls are not good layers I am wondering if she is slowing right down and maybe getting towards the end of her egg laying.

Ginger has taken to laying her eggs in the shelter. When she was laying in the nest box she would shout if another girl, usually Silver, looked in at her. I wonder if she has moved to the shelter so that she isn’t watched. She has laid her last four eggs in the shelter.

I think Mango is getting close to starting to lay as she now squats as soon as I get near her.

Mango squats

The game girls look so funny when they squat as they fold at the legs. It looks most uncomfortable. I only have to get near to Mango and she drops into a squat.

I think the new girls will be a great addition to the flock. It will give us two wyndottes which means two layers of larger eggs and two sebrights which means two non broody breeds. This should improve the egg laying. It will also make for a very pretty mix of girls. I am looking forward to their arrival.

I think it will be an attractive mix of girls.

It’s like the broody circus! Hopefully, your new girls will give not just some colour, but some balance on the broody front. 🙂

That’s what I am hoping. Cloud started to squat today so as usual she isn’t far behind Mango. Hopefully these two should start laying soon.
