Storm has lost her tail

All three game girls are moulting but Storm is behind Mango and Cloud who are growing their feathers back in. Storm has always moulted slowly in the past and has never looked much different.

This year Storm has moulted much quicker and has looked tattier then she ever has before. It’s the first time Storm has noticeably lost her tail.

Storm with a very short tail

It is funny seeing her like this but she will soon be back to normal.

    Comment from next post:
Broodiness certainly has a negative impact on egg production and, at this stage in the year, they often go from being broody into a moult. I’ve come back from holiday to 4 broody and some serious moults, so eggs will be in short supply here. You look at the moulters and compare them with the beauty of Red’s plumage and there is such a difference. Still, they’ll all look pristine again by the end of the year.

Egg production has never been so low in my flock. We have been down to one egg layer for months now. It went from only Snow laying to now only Red laying. The girls are feathering up quite quickly now though and Storm’s tail is back to normal already.

Tomorrow morning we collect our new girls. Let the fun begin!
