Saffron

Sadly we have lost Saffron after only three months with us. She was such a beautiful colour and a good egg layer during her last month with us. I haven’t got a huge amount of photos of her but I have picked out the best ones. I wish now that I had taken more photos recently.

August – Saffron and Diamond’s arrival in our chicken run
September – portrait of Saffron after one month with us
September – Saffron looking beautiful
October – Saffron having mash with her flock mates
October – Saffron joins the two broody girls on the day she laid her first egg
November – one of the last photos I took with saffron in them

Her time with us was all too short but she won’t be forgotten.

Such a pretty girl.It must have been a shock, so sad.You have no idea why? Some lovely pictures of her. xxx

She was very pretty. It reminded me of Treacle, the first girl we lost. She had been laying for six months and the vet couldn’t find anything wrong with her. Sometimes with chickens you just never know what was wrong. xxx

I’m so sorry, Carol – and really shocked, although I have had this happen a couple of times in the past. She looked so very healthy when she came into lay. Sometimes, though, they seem to have a sudden issue, like a heart attack, and literally fall off their perch during the night; it doesn’t help in getting over the shock but (as with humans) it is nice when they do not suffer over a protracted period. As you say, there is some irony in that it has been Diamond who’s taken up the majority of your focus since you bought the pair of them, but Saffron dies suddenly, whilst Diamond seems to have put her health issues behind her. Nice tribute for a girl whose stay with you was much shorter than you’d ever have hoped.

Thank you for your kind words. Having invested in getting Diamond back to health I have grown very fond of her and she is such a lovely character. It’s always a shock to lose a girl suddenly but as you say better that than a drawn out ending. It seems that we never know whats round the corner with our girls. I am hoping for a settled period now and dread the thought of losing any of my lovely girls in the future but will enjoy every moment with them that I can.
