Storm lays her first egg of the year

For the last few days Storm has been very vocal and has been looking in the nest boxes and the corners of the shed. This morning she was in and out of the nest boxes. I didn’t manage to get a photo of her in the nest box because I was busy and missed her but she gave out the egg shout.

When I checked her egg was in the nest box nearest the chicken shed. It is bigger than Silver’s and Ginger’s eggs. I remember now that her eggs have always been quite big for her small size.

Storm’s egg is on the left and Silver’s egg is on the right

So we are back to three girls laying. Red gave up being broody after just a few days so it shouldn’t be too long before she is back to laying again. Gold is now squatting when I hold my hand over her and is also very vocal so I think she will also start laying soon.

More good news, Carol. It’s been very poor for eggs here – until today, when I am in disbelief at 9! 2 laid on the floor of one of the hen houses and one outside! No first-timers, so strange. I’ve put another couple of nest boxes up this afternoon but – as we know only too well, it never matters how much choice there is – they all want the same one.:)

How odd. That’s a good number of eggs but as you say it never matters how many nest boxes there are. They seem to be having a day off here today. They all seem to lay together every other day and then none in between.

    All good news.

Storm laid again yesterday and so did Red. Red had taken a break of eight days which is really quite quick after being broody. She was only broody for a day and the quicker they come out of it the quicker they start laying again. We now have four girls laying which is great.

Every other day seems to be the pattern here, too. Only 2 the next day, but back up to 8 today.

It’s funny isn’t it, how in sync they seem to be. We had three eggs yesterday, Red, Storm and Ginger and none today so far. It’s as if they all like to lay on the same day.
