Back to the garden for a change of subject

After all the works going on this week I thought I would reflect on the garden which has been a bit ignored lately.

There is a lovely wall of colour at the moment from the roses up to the hop plant. I think it is fair to say that it has been a good year for the roses.

OMG, my sweet Pearl has worms. I thought I had dealt with just about every possible issue possible with these hens but last week Pickles got Egg Yolk Peritonitis. And then Pearl took ill. At first I thought she had just eaten something in the garden and the vet ran a dropping sample just to be sure and it came back w/ two kinds of parasites. She said she’d get back to me Monday with a course of treatment. I’m guessing for all four hens. UGH, why is it always something with these feathered beauties?

    • Oh I am so sorry. You are right that there always seems to be something. Here we use flubenvet for worms and treat the whole flock but I think you have different products to us. It does always seem that problems come together.

I hadn’t had a loss since Treacle three years ago, then have now lost two girls in the space of two months. I suppose with Amber’s egg laying problems I was lucky to have her for two years but Sparkle was only a year old.

I am going to let the flock settle for at least a year now as they seem happy and healthy but you just never know what is round the corner.

      Keep me posted.

Will do. I’m trying not to panic. But I too had a good run. Then Pickles got egg yolk peritonitis last Sunday. Wednesday, Pearl came down w/ something, still not sure what but the dropping sample from her is what showed the worms.

Then last evening, I found Peaches nibbling on her foot and she had sliced open her helix toe. I cleaned it and wrapped it but she HATES the wrap. I kept it on till just a bit ago. She’s been hiding in a nest all day yesterday and today. Not sure if she feels safe in there. She is molting. Or if her sisters are picking on her. I doubt she’s broody but who knows.

UGH, I’m just so frustrated right now.

    • I feel your pain. Why do these things all come at once! Poor Peaches. Injuries do tend to heal quickly though. They seem to recover much better from injuries than from illness so I am sure she will soon be on the mend.

Emerald and Toffee are still moulting. It seems to have taken ages and Emerald is nearly back to normal but Toffee is still dropping loads of feathers. She looks okay though. I guess when they are done the rest will start.

Let me know how they progress, I will be thinking of you.
