The shelter gets a new perch

I felt that our wooden shelter could do with another perch a bit further inside it as the existing perch is on it’s front edge and it has a platform at the back. I wanted to get the girls used to another perch before winter in the hope that this would mean they would use it in winter.

Apricot demonstrates the new perch. She is the easiest of the girls to pick up so I use her for trying out new perches. I hope that the girls will soon discover this perch for themselves making it more likely that they will perch there on cold, windy days.

I am thinking about copying your shelter!

Does that part of the run have a roof or is it open?

    • The whole of my run is roofed. The half above that shelter is solid roof and the other half, lengthwise, is roof panels that can be opened on sunny days and closed the rest of the time. Despite this there are still parts of the run that get wet from rain coming in the sides or dripping through some of the joins.

The reason we put in two shelters is because seramas originate from a hot country, Malaysia, and I felt the shelters would give a bit of extra protection from cold and wind, that is of course if they use them on cold days.

    Brilliant photo of Apricot.

  3. I picked her up and put her on the perch facing away from me. I then got my camera ready while she turned herself round and snapped as she was about to jump down. Being so easy to handle makes her my guinea pig!

Apricot looks so tiny, on the new perch.

    • She is quite tiny. Only Cinnamon is tinier than her but with thicker legs and feet. When I go up and the girls run down to me Apricot always looks like a toy with her little legs going so fast. She is sweetie.
