Red lays an egg

Yesterday Red went to the oyster shell. She always goes to the oyster shell the day before she lays an egg. I then realised how red her face and comb are and that she was more vocal than usual. She had also stopped dropping feathers about a week ago. I thought she was getting ready to lay again.

I was right, Red laid an egg today!

Red’s egg is on the left and Maple’s egg is on the right

Looking back at last year Red stopped laying after the first week of September so she may not lay for long or she may perhaps lay a bit longer because she has had a break. She has had a break of three weeks. Well done Red! It’s great to have another girl laying for however long it will be.

Let’s hope she continues – and she lays a good-sized egg. A couple of mine are still laying the occasional egg, despite moulting.

Red lays the biggest eggs but then she is the biggest girl. I always think she is border line bantam size. Popcorn’s eggs are similar in size to the rest of the girls.
