Freckles and Rusty love pecking at the pine shavings in the chicken shed. Every morning when I poop pick, they keep me company, pecking away together.
Sometimes when I go in to the run they appear to be missing. I soon spot them pecking away just inside the pop hole. I assume they like this spot as it allows in enough light to help with their pecking. There is nothing to be had in the shavings but they just love to scratch and peck in them.
In this photo you can see that Rusty’s silky feathers are more like hairs.
Freckles and Rusty are a really close pair and are always together. What ever one of them does the other will do too. They are never far from each other and they are an incredibly cute pair.
Simply gorgeous. Rusty’s feathers are just like silkies’; I know that Freckles would be described as ‘smooth feathered’, but is there a term for Rusty’s feathering?
P.S. first pullet egg today – my only marans – so a lovely chocolate brown. 🙂
Freckles is termed straight feathered and Rusty is termed silky feathered. Seramas also come in frizzled feathered too. The breeder of these two also had his own cross which he called srizzled (cross between silky and frizzled feathered). I might get one of those next time if he still has some.
Well done that girl on laying an egg. Lovely to have a chocolate brown egg.
Lovely pair so very close.
They are. If anything I think they are even closer than Peaches and Barley. They are totally inseparable all the time.
