A heap of snow

Scotland have just had a heap of snow. They had two inches or more and the northern part of England had quite a bit too. It seems to have fizzled out as it came southwards which was lucky for us. This was what we woke up to this morning.

Sparkling snow on the cabin roof

Only the roofs had a smattering of snow around us and the early morning sunshine made it sparkle. It didn’t last for long. The wind chill factor has made it feel colder today but we are so lucky to escape the snow. It caused chaos in the north of the country.

The girls know the drill in this weather. They all congregate on the perch above the ladder to catch the morning sun. As soon as the sun is gone from there they alternate between the two shelters. The shelters have proved invaluable this winter. I am really pleased at how much the girls take advantage of them.

The girls are looking good and the sneezing is gradually getting less and less. Cinnamon is dropping her tail feathers but she continues to roost under Speckles wing at night so I feel she is able to keep herself warm. It is heartwarming to see them snuggled up together.

I feel that the flock is in a better place than it has been for a while and I am looking forward to getting the girls into spring and warmer weather.

    That is good news.

  2. I think so, keeping everything crossed.

We escaped the snow at home and where I’ve been working. It can be a real hassle for me when it interrupts the roads as I do about 500 miles a week commuting.

I’m also looking forwards to the nicer weather and light nights. Fed up of the dark!

    • Goodness, that’s a lot of miles. At least our delivery round is pretty local. I can’t wait for better weather and longer days. I am definitely a summer person and summer is so much better for the chooks.

Very difficult conditions here in the north east today – about 5 inches of snow this morning and little treatment of other than the main artery roads. I had to clear the hen run before I let them out – took me a good 20 minutes, but they’ve spent most of the day in the warmth of the scratching shed. There has been a reasonable thaw, but overnight lows will make it treacherous again in the morning. Even stopped the buses for a time around here this morning. Pleased I topped up with hen food and bedding last week!

    • Oh dear, I feel a bit guilty for my light hearted post now. I said that Scotland had had more than two inches of snow and after I had written this post I heard that some parts had later had up to seven inches. We had nothing this time round, can’t count a small smattering. Hope conditions improve for you soon. We have got off very lightly although it was really windy during the night last night and there are trees down around us. We luckily escaped any damage though so I am thankful. Hope you get better conditions soon.
